Guildford A.C. was performing quite well going into the Richmond tournament and was looking to continue to improve their play against some quality opposition.
In the opening game of the tournament, A.C. was taking on the Richmond Coyotes. Guildford were quite poor in the early stages of the game allowing Richmond to dictate the play and appearing content to let it continue. The sub par effort quickly cost A.C. a goal against and that seemed to wake the girls up. Guildford never really found their stride in the game but improved their play enough to build a 4-1 lead and win the game.
In game two, Guildford was pitted against the Port Moody Sting. A.C. had not seen Port Moody before however, the Sting had earned good results in league play against some very tough opposition and Guildford was expecting a tough match. A.C. was quite strong right from the opening whistle and Port Moody mounted very little offensive pressure. Final score was 6-0 in favour of A.C.
Both having won their first two games meant that the third game against Surdel was more of a formality as the two teams would meet again in the final later in the afternoon. Surdel scored very early on a PK and Guildford chased the game right up to the final minute where A.C. scored on a free kick from 25 yards out to tie it up.
In the final, A.C. played significantly better. They came out very strong in the first half and put tons of pressure on Surdel despite the Storm's defensive tactics. Late in the first half, Guildford got on the board 1-0 and within a few minutes had added 2 more for a 3-0 lead going into the half. A.C. knew Surdel would come out strong in the early stages of the second but if they could survive the early pressure would likely earn the result and the gold. Surdel pushed hard but still had difficulty getting scoring chances despite the pressure. With ten minutes remaining, the Storm finally got on the board but it proved to be too little too late as A.C. steered home a 3-1 win.
By conincidence, the two teams will compete for a third time in seven days as Surdel and A.C. meet this coming weekend in league play. A.C. is looking to keep its undefeated record against Surdel intact however, that could prove difficult against a highly motivated Surdel squad who will be looking to avenge the loss in the tournament final.
