Guildford A.C. wasn't planning to take the T.S.S. Indoor Tournament particularly seriously, preferring to use the event as a tune up for a larger tournament following Christmas. However with the imminent cancelation of the outdoor event, A.C. wanted to make their mark in the indoor tournament.
In their first game, A.C. stuggled a bit on the smaller surface and had trouble adjusting to a completely different style of game. Thier opposition, Surrey United, outchanced A.C. and exposed lackluster defensive play by dribbling at A.C. defenders. Guildford was, however, able to finish some of their own chances and managed to eke out a 2-2 draw.
In game two Guildford played the hosts T.S.S.. A.C. picked up the pace of thier play significantly from the first game and tightened up defensively. Although finishing was still a bit suspect Guildford put in enough to earn a 3-1 win.
In the third game the opposition was North Delta United. North Delta scored first and set the tone for game. While A.C. proved to be the stronger team they seemed to chase the game, despite holding a lead, and looked out-of-sync. Final score 6-2.
A.C. advanced out the round robin in 2nd place and would play T.S.S. in the Semi-Final. This game would be played in the arena which certainly favored the hosts who are much more familiar with the game in that setting. The game was a bit of a see-saw battle that lacked the flow of Guildford's normal play. T.S.S. and A.C. traded goals before Guildford was able to pull ahead just before full-time and steer home the win and a spot in the final. Final score 3-2.
The final would see a re-match of the opening game; this time though, the game would be played in the arena which A.C. was hoping would favor them a bit. Guildford got off to a great start scoring inside two minutes for a 1-0 lead. Surrey United climbed back even on a penalty that was well struck for the tally. A.C. had saved their best performance for the final. In this game Guildford looked confident on the ball, were able to connect passes together and build up successfully. Being able to control the pace of the game helped A.C. add two more goal for a 3-1 lead. United struggled to get quality scoring chances but did manage to finish a spectacular effort to close within one; that would be as close as they got. Guildford protected the lead and won the final 3-2.
Guildford was pleased to get five quality games in the tournament. With the win, A.C. have added to their impressive tournament record which now stands at four golds and one silver in five tournaments dating back to the KYSA Cup in May. League play resumes January 10th against the Chilliwack Attack.
