Guildford A.C. looked to be in tough against the league leading SFC Panthers who are not only atop the table but lead the league in goals scored and have the fewest goal against. A.C. knew they would have to work hard to get a result against a team that seemed to posess a lot of firepower and rock solid defensive line.
Guildford went to work very early in the game, unexpectedly converting inside the first minute of the game to take 1-0 lead. A.C. enjoyed long periods in posession of the ball and built numerous scoring chances but some lackluster finishing kept the game close. Midway through the half, an errant pass was picked off and finished to stretch the lead to 2-0 where the score would remain at the break.
Guildford found much more success in stretching the Panthers than trying to build up quickly and agressively; in the second half they would use that to their advantage. A.C. looked constantly dangerous in posession of the ball and out worked Surrey FC. On the back end, A.C. calmly dealt with several through-ball attempts, all of which were neatly dealt with by the keeper or cleaned up by the defensive line which further stifled and frustrated SFC.
As the second half progressed, the Panther's defensive structure was methodically picked apart and goals came quickly. In the half, A.C. tallied twice off corners, the second of which was a spectacular goal that was swung in perfectly and headed with power off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net. Guildford also added two more goals for a 6-0 final.
The Guildford boys worked hard and played well to earn the result which will put them in a four way tie for first in the league with a game in hand on the Panthers. With the win A.C. will have to work even harder as the strong showing will not likely go unnoticed by other clubs and opposing squads will be gearing up for their matches. Next week A.C. takes on the Abbotsford Mariners who have had mixed results in the first part of the season.
