Golden Thanksgiving Weekend in Coquitlam

CMF Thanksgiving Tournament Champions - Guildford A.C.

Highlights from Sunday's Semi-Final vs. North Van Lions Gate Capilanos and the Final vs. Richmond Young Gunners
Guildford A.C. was looking to make a name for themselves in the CMF Thanksgiving Tournament that had a field of many of the top '97 teams in the lower mainland.

In game one of the tournament, A.C. looked very strong holding the majority of posession and building scoring chances with regularity. After getting on the board, Guildford surrendered a goal on CMF Athletico's only scoring opportunity of the game. A.C. responded well in the game by adding four more goals in two different formations for a 5-1 final.

Game two saw Guildford take on the Kerrisdale Kometz. Kerrisdale showed fantastic ball posession and quick passing through their back end, but struggled to build anything forward despite A.C. being forced to chase the play. The boys in blue finished their chances very well and were able to build a three goal lead. Guildford limited Kerrisdale's chances to shots from the perimiter and some solid goaltending earned the shutout. Final score 3-0.

Having won their first two games, Guildford had already earned a spot in the semi-finals but had to play a crossover game against the very tough Lynn Valley Falcons who had beaten A.C. earlier this season to win gold at the Wesburn Tournament. Guildford got off to a great start scoring early in the game for a 1-0 lead. In the second half, a scary incident delayed the game for forty minutes. A seemingly innocuous collision saw a Guildford player go to ground in some pain, with the fear of a neck injury paramedics were called. In quite a display of sportmanship and class the Lynn Valley coach, a trained firefighter, took care of the Guildford player until help arrived.

Play resumed after the incident and A.C. was very much forced back on their heels. Lynn Valley was rewarded for their pressure as they managed to poke one home on a scramble in front to tie the game at one. With time winding down, Lynn Valley botched a corner that allowed a Guildford player to break onto goal with plenty of space. The A.C. player was brought down in the box and the ensuing PK was converted for a 2-1 Guildford win.

In the semi-finals Guildford was pitted against North Van Lions Gate. A.C. was able to get on the board early which allowed them to play with some confidence. They would add two more before the half for a 3-0 lead. In the second half Guildford added one more and kept NVLG from mounting any kind of dangerous chances. A.C. added one more before the final whistle for a 4-0 win.

Guildford had two hours before the final and took advantage of the time to dry out and rest in one of the facility's changerooms. Having geared down and rested before the final A.C. was in top form to take on Richmond for the gold medal.

In the championship game, A.C. again got on the board early on a free kick that was misplayed by the keeper and slipped in for a 1-0 lead. Another free kick saw A.C. put a great ball on net and the resulting rebound was tapped in for a 2-0 lead. Before half a perfectly swung in corner was nodded home for the 3-0 lead at half.

Guldford did not take the pressue off in the second half adding a fourth goal on some genuinely hard work that was rewarded with a goal. A.C. capped off the match scoring on another corner that was brilliantly executed; with the goal coming off a shot that went off the far post and in. Final score 5-0.

A.C. showed confidence playing two different systems in the tournament and knocking off some of the best opposition around. Guildford got great individual performances from every player in the lineup and came home with a well deserved gold medal.

Guildford A.C. opens up Conference Cup play next weekend against Aldergrove.
