Bittersweet Silver

Guildford A.C. with their silver medals in the Wesburn Tournament

A.C. was going into the Wesburn Tournament having enjoyed a lot of success in the pre-season. Although most of the competition was unknown entities, A.C. knew they were in for a tough battle with Lynn Valley on Sunday morning.

Saturday, Guildford took on Cliff Avenue in the morining and did not struggle to put up goals. The Cliff team was a little unprepared for the strength of the A.C. game but played hard. Final score 6-0.

In the afternoon game, A.C. was matched against Kensington-Little Mountain who had picked up a few boys from Guildford's local Surrey rivals SYS Red Devils. It took A.C. a while to get on the board but once they did the goals were not hard to come by. Final score 7-0.

Sunday morning Guildford would take on the Lynn Valley Falcons. A.C. knew this squad would pose a very tough challenge and this game would likely be the decider for gold and silver. It was very much a see-saw game with both teams showing some strong play however both teams failed to register signigicant scoring chances. Lynn Valley, however, was able to tally one midway through the fist half. Guildford poured on the pressure late and a tying goal seemed imminent but A.C. simply ran out of time and suffered the 1-0 defeat.

In the final game on Monday A.C. played the Port Coquitlam F.C. Gladiators and made quick work of them. Guildford built a three goal lead inside ten minutes and never looked back. The game got a bit chippy late but Guildford was able to keep their heads and avoid getting drawn into the rough tactics. Final score 7-0.

With the loss to Lynn Valley, Guildford narrowly missed the gold but continued to show they are a team to be reckoned with for other top squads out there.

Guildford starts their season campaign in the next two weeks.
